The Balloon Regatta (Globos) in Ajijic Mexico 2021

Yet another year has past since this well known popular tradition has been officially canceled due to COVID19. In 2020 it was also completely canceled, since the pandemic was in fill force during that year. The town was hopeful that the Ajijic Balloon Regatta “Globos”tradition for 2021 would continue, and all was looking as such, since many restrictions were lightened due to so many people receiving their vaccinations.

However about 60 days before the event was scheduled to take place, the Lake Chapala city government sent out an official notice saying all celebrations, traditions and events for September 2021 and Mexican Independence day were going to be CANCELED due to the spike in the new Delta variant of COVID.

Over 15 teams participate in this event and many start preparing the Balloons as much as 4 months before the event, due to the complex task of making them. Since it was canceled and many of the teams had already completed several balloons,  3 teams decided to meet in an open space and using safety protocols on the day the event should have take place to launch the few they had already made.

It was a small gathering and lasted for a few hours, while the balloons were being launched. All the teams were happy to be able to keep the traditions alive by not letting another year go by without keeping it going. Many images and videos were posted on Facebook and Instagram that same day of other teams launching their balloons from their homes or rooftops, it was wonderful to see the towns spirit and love towards this tradition.

We hope that next year the Lake Chapala Balloon Regatta “Globos” will be held without the scare of COVID19. So many people are being vaccinated that the teams are hopeful the gathering can take place on the Ajijic soccer field where thousands of people attend. Only time will tell and we hope to be able to celebrate in full force for 2022.
