The Verbena celebration dates back for over 120 years and the Ajijic locals keep this tradition alive by passing down its customs to their children. It takes place every year, the week before “Semana Santa” (Holy week), in order to raise funds for the “Viacrucis” reenactment (Passion of Christ). The Verbena consists in preparing traditional Mexican food the old fashioned way by heating with wood vs electricity and serving food in traditional barro plates instead of plastic and even lighting the Plaza at night with candles instead of electric. Confetti eggs crushed on the heads of friends and the game of “Loteria” is also played, adding some fun to the event.
