Although not an official event, the Rainy season in Lake Chapala area is a very anticipated time of the year, this is why we decided to add it to our events list. We have dated this event for June 21, however the season can start as early as June 1, so give or take a week or two. Why is this time of the year so anticipated for locals? The mountains start to transform from a dried up brown to a beautiful flourishing green, the Lakes water level starts to rise and the Lakeside towns start to cool down from the summer heat.

Did you know that ¨Ajijic¨ means ¨Where the water runs¨? You will see water rushing down the cobble stone streets during this season, mostly the streets in Ajijic where the water reaches 20 -30 cm, most times surpassing the streets and  overflowing sidewalks. While some are inconvenienced due to this, most Lakeside residents welcome all this water  due to the huge benefit it provides to our beautiful Lake.     Hi! If I wanted to check out the area in anticipation of retiring there, where should I start? Do you guys have any recommendations on where to stay, and how long I should plan to be there to get a well-rounded idea of whether it’s right for me?

      Hi Gretchen, we recommend staying at a B&B in downtown Ajijic, this allows you to walk everywhere and get to know the town. A 2 week stay would be perfect timing.
